Here’s how it all works.
Battery Swap: 3 Minutes to Full Range
NIO’s Power Swap Stations allow drivers to swap a depleted battery for a fully charged one in approximately 3 minutes — faster than filling a gas tank. The process is fully automated: drive in, the station lowers the old battery, installs a fresh one, and you drive out. No human interaction required.
As of early 2026, NIO operates over 3,500 Power Swap Stations globally, with the network concentrated in China and expanding in Europe and other international markets. NIO has completed over 90 million total battery swaps cumulatively.
NIO Power Charger 4.0
For traditional plug-in charging, NIO offers its Power Charger 4.0 — an ultra-fast DC charger capable of up to 640 kW output (on supported hardware). NIO also operates a growing network of NIO Power charging stations in parking garages, highways, and urban areas across China and Europe.
Home Charging: Power Home 2.0 & Plus
NIO offers home charging solutions including the Power Home 2.0 (standard home wallbox) and Power Home Plus (higher output home charger). These are installed by NIO’s service team and can be managed through the NIO app. The system integrates with smart scheduling to charge during off-peak hours.
Power Mobile: Charging On Demand
NIO’s Power Mobile service dispatches a mobile charging vehicle directly to the owner’s location. If you’re stranded or simply don’t want to drive to a station, a NIO Power Mobile unit can come to you. This service is available in major cities and is accessed through the NIO app with one tap.
One Click for Power
NIO’s “One Click for Power” feature is accessible directly from the NIO app or NOMI voice assistant. With a single command, NIO dispatches the most appropriate energy solution based on your location, battery level, and schedule — whether that’s a swap, a mobile charger, or a nearby station recommendation.
Battery as a Service (BaaS) & Battery Upgrades
NIO offers a unique Battery as a Service (BaaS) subscription model that allows buyers to purchase a NIO vehicle without the battery — reducing the upfront cost — and pay a monthly subscription for battery use. Subscribers can also upgrade to a higher capacity pack as new batteries become available, future-proofing the vehicle’s range over time.
This means a NIO owner who bought a 75 kWh pack vehicle in 2020 can upgrade to a 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery today — dramatically increasing range without buying a new car.
Power Cloud
Underpinning the entire NIO Power system is Power Cloud — an intelligent energy management platform that tracks battery health, predicts swap demand, optimizes station inventory, and routes drivers to the nearest available solution. It’s what allows NIO’s network to operate at scale with minimal downtime.
